The lagoon gets its color from the presence of algae and brine shrimp. When these organisms die, their carcasses sink to the bottom of the lagoon and decompose. The process of decomposition release a reddish pigment called beta-carotene into the water. This is what gives the lagoon its characteristic pink color.
High salinity of the water is also a contributing factor to the lagoon’s pink hue. Saltier water has a higher refractive index, meaning it can scatter light more effectively. This results in the water appearing pink when viewed from above.
